Compromise of 1850- Consists of five laws passed that delt with the issue of slavery. The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington D.C was abolished.
The Kansas Nebraska Act- Senator Stephen Douglas introduced a bill that divided the land west of Missouri into two territories, Kansas and Nebraska.
Bleeding Kansas- A period of violence during the settling of Kansas-Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri compromise's use of latitude as the boundary between slave and free territory.
The Dred Scott Decision- One of the most controversial events preceding the Civil War, the U.S supreme court issued its decision in the case of Dred Scott. A slave who had lived with his owner in a free state before returning to the slave state.
Lincoln - Douglas Debates- Series of formal political debates between the challenger Abraham Lincoln and incumbent, Stephen A. Douglas, in a campaign for one Illinois' two United States senate seats.
Harper's Ferry- Historic town in Jefferson county, West Virginia, United States.
Lincoln's Election- Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United states over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to be elected as president.
Fort Sumter- Located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Best known as the site upon which the shots that started the civil war.
Bull Run- First major battle land of the armies in Virginia.
Antietam- Also know as the Battle of Sharpsburg. Fought on Sept 17th 1862.
Emancipation Proclamation- Was an executive order issued by president Abraham Lincoln. It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states still in rebellion.
Gettysburg Address- Most famous speech by Abraham Lincoln
Andersonville Prison- One of the largest confederate military prisons. More than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined here. Almost 13.00 died here.
Surrender at Appomattox Court House- Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to General Grant. The meeting lasted approximately two and a half hours and the conclusion was the bloodiest conflict in the nations history neared its end.
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln- Took place on Good Friday April 14th, 1865. The war was drawing towards a close. he got assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
Reconstruction- Had two senses: first covers the entire country and the second focuses on the transformation of the southern Untied States.
